The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) is an open-admission, comprehensive, regional community college that serves more than 23,000 credit and continuing education students at campuses in La Plata, Leonardtown, Prince Frederick, as well as the new Regional Hughesville Campus.
Established in 1958, CSM has seen incredible growth in enrollment, physical facilities, program offerings and impact with the college serving as an economic engine for the 350,000 residents of Southern Maryland with a variety of affordable academic, technical, and vocational programs. Services to the business community include the Corporate Center’s customized training, the region’s Small Business Development Center, the Entrepreneur and Innovation Institute, and a new tech transfer partnership with the Navy called the Velocity Center. The college is also a hub for much of the area’s social, cultural, and wellness activities.
CSM is located close to Washington, DC, and Baltimore, and has more than 60 guaranteed articulation agreements with four-year partner institutions. This allows students to start in Southern Maryland and transfer seamlessly to the college of their choice.

The story began in 1958 when the Charles County Community College was established as part of the continuing expansion of the community college in America. At its inception in 1958, the college was governed by the Charles County Board of Education, with the first classes conducted at La Plata High School in the evenings. The La Plata campus was established in 1968. The college expanded its services to St. Mary's County in 1978 and Calvert County in 1980.
On July 1, 2000, the college officially became the College of Southern Maryland (CSM), a regional college serving Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary's counties. Today, College of Southern Maryland is known as a progressive, innovative, and technologically-advanced institution. As a regionally-accredited institution that prides itself on delivering high quality educational services, it also serves as a catalyst for business, industry, and government to identify the resources needed to grow and maintain a healthy economy and community.
CSM offers an array of associate's degree programs, industry certifications, career training, wellness and fitness activities. CSM prepares its students for transfer to bachelor's degree programs and provides the tools and resources needed to immediately succeed in a competitive marketplace.

- CSM was named as one of 150 community colleges nationwide that are eligible to compete for the 2019 Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence, the nation’s signature recognition of high achievement and performance in America’s community colleges.
- As the fifth largest veteran-serving Maryland college or university, CSM served approximately 807 students using the GI Bill, which accounts for more than $1.6 million in tuition and fee payments annually and was designated as a “Military Friendly School” by Victory Media and as a “Top School” in the Military Advanced Education Guide to Colleges and Universities.
- More than 1,778 CSM students transferred to 260 different colleges and universities in 44 states and the District of Columbia in 2017. Destinations include Maryland’s universities and other highly regarded schools across the nation.
- Governor Larry Hogan appointed Laura Polk, Health Sciences Division Chair, to be the associate’s degree nurse educator representative for the state of Maryland.
- CSM’s Talons Robotics Team finished at the semi-finalist level at the 2017 VEX-U World Championship, competing against 61 university teams from around the world.

The invitation from the Aspen Institute to apply for the 2019 Aspen Prize recognized the efforts by CSM’s many dedicated staff and faculty who are working to implement positive changes in student outcomes. To take the next step, the college has joined Achieving the Dream (ATD), a network of more than 220 colleges in 43 states dedicated to improving student success. As a Network institution, CSM will innovate to implement, align, and scale cutting-edge reforms, work with ATD coaches to build institutional capacity and connect with peers to foster learning and share information.

The Prince Frederick Campus in Calvert County hosts a variety of amenities, including two state-of-the-art buildings consisting of nearly 90,000 square feet. The campus has specialized science labs, allied health labs, a distance learning classroom, a nuclear engineering technology lab, and fully equipped multi-media meeting space and is home of the Ward Virt’s Concert Series, piano concerts held throughout the year. 115 J.W. CSM's new 74-acre Regional Hughesville Campus provides offerings and programs to serve the entire region in a more cost-effective and convenient way. The master plan, as designed and presented by Grimm and Parker Architects, is designed to create a sense of community and includes five phases of growth. The first phase was the construction of a 30,000-square-foot Center for Trades and Energy Training, opened in 2017. The second phase is the construction of the 50,000-square-foot Center for Health Sciences, which is scheduled to open in 2021.
The Velocity Center at Indian Head is designed to be a space for innovation and collaboration for the college, for the Navy, and for the community. Its purpose is to promote professional development for Navy scientists and engineers, to enhance the retention of talent, to provide opportunities for entrepreneurship and experimentation, to recruit young talent, and to build good will among the community outside the gate.
At the Waldorf Center for Higher Education, CSM and the University of Maryland University College (UMUC) provide the route for busy adults to earn their bachelor's degree on the fast track. Students can earn their degrees in five areas of study: accounting, computer programming, general studies communications pathway, information services technology, and management development.

The Planning, Institutional Effectiveness, and Research Department (PIER) helps the college community to improve student learning and achieving organizational effectiveness. Its mission is accomplished through the development and implementation of strategic plans, assessment plans, and process improvement at all levels of the college. The office works collaboratively with current and prospective students, faculty, staff, regulatory agencies and other external customers to provide the highest quality customer service while continuously improving processes and maximizing college resources.

- Master’s Degree (Ph.D. preferred)
